Play will be to the 21st century what work was to the industrial age:
our dominant way of KNOWING, DOING, and CREATING VALUE
– Pat Kane, The Play Ethic

Play is the way children learn who they are and how the world works. Young children learn best through play that is relevant and meaningful to their life, and is the foundation of creativity. Benefits include: problem-solving skills, enhanced concentration, discovering, interacting, absorbing, experiencing. Children’s play should be characterized by

  • Freedom of choice
  • Intrinsic motivation
  • Imagination more than fixed rules
  • Spontaneity

In the same book The Play Ethic, Pat Kane says,

…it’s a zone where we test out potential scenarios for living,
without cost, without fear, with joy, because we want to.
